Read Bermuda – Day 1

On the second day of our week-long trip to Bermuda after breakfast week took a short taxi ride to Jobson’s Cove at Warwick Long Bay. Picture pefect Jobson’s Cove is the perfect place for both little kids and adults alike. When we arrived the only other visitors were from a local pre-school. The protected shallow waters were very calm and crystal clear allowing us to watch the fish swim around from above the water. We brought some cereal to feed the fish, as well, which the kids had a blast doing.

Before this trip we did some research into the best beach blanket and
insulated backpack cooler bag to make beach hopping with kids possible.
We knew this trip would require a lot of walking (you can’t rent a car in Bermuda). In the past we’ve used a bed sheet as a beach blanket and that can be bulky and take up a lot of room. And for food and drinks we’ve carried a separate cooler bag and beach bag.

The Gonex Sand Proof Beach Blanket seemed to be the best choice for our needs. The larger model opens up to 6.5′ by 4.5′ and folds up to about the size of a soda can. It comes with four plastic stakes to keep it from blowing away as well as pockets to fill with sand.

The Kyndley insulated backpack has a separate cooler compartment on the bottom and a regular backpack compartment on the top. The bottom adequately fit water bottles, sandwiches, fruit, and ice packs while the top was able to hold up to four beach towels.

For ice-packs, we purchased a set of five Cooler Shock lunch bag size ice packs. Doing research into ice packs seems silly, but it definitely paid off. We also used these to keep a cooler bag in our suit case cold to transport frozen food to Bermuda and they stayed cold for the entire journey.

After a few hours at Jobson’s Cove we walked toward the west to Horseshoe Bay. This walk takes you along the water and up some hills through a camping area.

Once we got to Horseshoe Bay it was much more crowded since this is where most of the cruise ship passengers venture to.

Our kids were tried from the walk so we took a taxi back up the hill to our rental. Clearly the taxi cab driver was hoping to transport someone to the Dockyard or another further destination and now our 1 mile $6 trip.

Back at the rental we took a quick dip in the pool and than everyone washed up and changed clothes in preparation for dinner. For dinner we checked out the Ocean Club at the nearby Fairmont Southampton Hotel. To get there we walked along the Railway Trail to the Fairmont’s Waterlot Inn shuttle bus stop. Then we took the free shuttle up the hill and back down the other side to the Ocean Club restaurant.

The Ocean Club restaurant was the most expensive meal we had in Bermuda and most of that cost is probably because of the amazing views. Cocktails were $19 and were decent but not very remarkable. Service was very slow and did not meet expectations for the cost.

The restaurant accommodated our children’s food allergies well for the kid’s meal. The entrees were tasty and prepared nicely.

After dinner we took the shuttle back up the hill to the Fairmont Southampton Hotel to check out the hotel. The lobby was very large and the grounds were nice. The highlight for our kids was the Children’s Play Room in the basement of the lobby. While technically only for registered hotel guests, we didn’t feel guilty letting the kids place after spending $200 on dinner at the property.

We took a taxi from the Fairmont back to our rental because we didn’t want to walk back along the Railway Trail while it was starting to get dark. We made it back to our rental just in time to enjoy the sunset and the kids enjoyed the chocolate cereal for dessert.
